A giant mushroom forest, much of it in decay

A few weeks ago I went on a hike, exploring the wildlife just outside my neighborhood on Undercore. You know what I found? Blight. A large area of mushroom forest had been eaten away, leaving behind half rotted stumps and decaying mushroom caps. I didn't know it yet, but a killer was roaming the land, and would soon devastate the forest completely. The killer's name? Ethereal Fusarium.

Ethereal Fusarium might sound like an evil space-man; maybe someone who landed on Undercore around the time the Enterprise showed up. It's not. Ethereal Fusarium is a disease. It slowly kills giant Ethereal mushrooms.

Scientists think Ethereal Fusarium adapted from normal soil microbes. Normal fusarium might ruin the kind of mushroom you eat on a salad. But these microbes have gone big-time; they feed on giant Ethereal Mushrooms - an invasive species that did show up with the Star Ship Enterprise - so much for the prime directive.

Ethereal Fusarium spreads fast! So fast that, unchecked, they can destroy an entire mushroom forest in a matter of weeks, or even just days, depending on weather. And when it does? Gross. An entire landscape of half-rotten mushroom stems, decaying caps, and let's not get started on that smell.

On my most recent hike, I saw that the mushroom forest was almost entirely gone, but there were no signs of decay. Local grasses replaced the purple undergrowth, and the landscape has been cleaned up. It turns out, the blight was so bad forestry service had to intervene. They had no choice but to cut down the entire forest.
